Centerra Gold Kumtor Gold Mine Office in Kyrgystan Attacked by Protestors

Kumtor mine, located about 430 kilometres from Bishkek, accounted for bulk of Centerra’s gold production during the previous year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): As per reports by Russian news agencies, protestors in Kyrgystan broke into Centerra Gold Kumtor Gold Company Office. No employees were at the office during the time of attack, as employees have been working from home since the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.

The attack came one day after the Canadian miner had declared that its Kumtor gold mine operations were largely unaffected due to the political unrest in the country. The company had stated that it is taking all possible precautions to ensure the safety of its employees and operations.

Earlier this week, the protestors, who denounced the results of the parliamentary elections, had gathered in protest at the national capital Bishkek. The protestors had stormed government buildings, demanding impeachment of the country’s President, Sooronbai Jeenbekov and declaration of the election result as invalid.

Kumtor mine, located about 430 kilometres from Bishkek, accounted for bulk of Centerra’s gold production during the previous year. It had accounted for 600,201 ounces out of the total production of 783,308 ounces produced during the year.

The political unrest had forced Kaz Minerals to suspend production at its Bozymchak copper and gold mine, following attacks on another gold deposit.
