Research Study Warns About Alarming Surge in Plastic Emissions
It must be noted that the annual emissions had totalled only 8 million metric tonnes in 2015.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The research by the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto (U of T) has highlighted the accelerating pace at which plastic emissions enter the Earth’s waterways. The study focuses on the importance of putting brakes on plastics production and use by promoting transformation to a framework that is based on recycling.
According to Chelsea Rochman, assistant professor and senior author of the study, the worldwide emissions to waterways including rivers, lakes and oceans are likely to touch 53 million metric tonnes by the year 2030. This is even after the world governments meet their commitments to curb plastic waste. It must be noted that the annual emissions had totalled only 8 million metric tonnes in 2015.
The study estimates indicate that up to 34 million metric tonnes of plastic emissions enter waterbodies every year. In order to keep emission levels under control, plastic production across economies must be reduced by up to 40%. The level of waste collection and management must be increased considerably across all economies, with special focus on low-income economies. In addition, cleanup processes need to be geared up, so as to be able to recover 40% of annual plastic emissions.
