Wastefront Selects UK Port as the Site for its New Tyre Recycling Plant

The plant will have processing capacity of around 180 tonnes of end-of-life tyres on a daily basis.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Wastefront- a Norwegian company announced that it will construct an innovative tyre recycling plant in the UK port of Sunderland. The plant will carry out chemical recycling of waste tyres. The construction of the plant is expected to begin early next year. The operations of the plant are expected to commence in the second half of 2022.

The plant will use innovative pyrolysis technique to convert locally-sourced end-of-life (ELT) tyres into liquid hydrocarbons and carbon black, which are then reused in alternative fuel or ground rubber manufacturing. The construction phase of the project will create around 100 jobs. Upon full operations, the company will offer 30 full-time jobs in the regions, company press release said.

Wastefront has received funding support from the Norwegian state-owned company and national development bank, Innovation Norway and the Research Council of Norway. In addition, the company has also decided to raise additional investments from UK, Nordic and International investors towards construction of the plant.
