Resolute to Resume El Dorado Sawmill Operations in Early-2021

The company had reported net income of $6 million during the second quarter on sales of $612 million.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Resolute Forest Products announced that it is moving ahead with plans to reopen the El Dorado, Arkansas sawmill at the earliest. The saw mill was closed in August last year. The mill is one among the three mills that the company acquired from Conifex Timber in February this year, the other two being Cross City (Florida) and Glenwood (Arkansas) sawmills.

At the time of idling the mill, Conifex had cited heavy decline in lumber prices as one of the reasons. It had undertaken a major upgrade at the mill by spending $65 million, just around two years prior to the closure. This had boosted the mill’s production capacity to 180 million board feet of construction-grade dimensional lumber per annum.

In the Q2 financial report published by the company, Yves Laflamme, president, and CEO stated that the recent lumber market revival has prompted the company to bring back to production come of the idled Canadian facilities. The company plans to bring the El Dorado saw mill facility on line by early-2021, mainly due to prevailing promising lumber market situations.

Meantime, the demand for paper products is likely to be impacted by economic slowdown. The pulp market too is expected to stabilize over the period, Laflamme added.
