The Aluminum Association Is All Praise For Canada As It Adds Aluminum Into Import Control List

The federal government action will help to protect Canada’s aluminum workers and industry, said the Aluminum Association.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The decision by the Canadian government to add certain aluminum products to its import monitoring list was welcomed by the Aluminum Association. The federal government action will help to protect Canada’s aluminum workers and industry, it noted.

According to statement issued by Lauren Wilk, Vice President for Policy at the Aluminum Association, the inclusion of aluminum products in the import monitoring system will help government officials and the industry to identify trends in trade flows. Furthermore, it would also help in addressing other key issues impacting the sector, including aluminum misclassification, transshipment and evasion of duties. The statement urged the U.S. administration to create a similar import monitoring system to address such issues in the country, thereby ensuring level-playing field within North America for domestic U.S. aluminum producers.

As part of efforts to protect aluminum industry in the country from unfairly traded imports, the Canadian government had decided to establish aluminum import monitoring regime. Accordingly, starting September 1, 2019, certain aluminum products will be added to the Import Control List (ICL).  As a result, the importers in Canada will be subject to strict reporting obligations, so as to ensure that the imported aluminum products are in compliance with relevant trade law. Furthermore, the industry and the Government will have access to more timely aluminum import data.
