Canada Continues to be the Top Importer of US Pig Iron
The top three importers of pig iron from the US were Canada, Mexico and India. Canada received a total of $16.81 million, accounting for more than 83% share of total US exports.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest trade data published by the US Census Bureau indicates that pig iron exports by the country surged higher significantly during the first ten months of the year. The exports during the ten-month period soared nearly 163% to total $20.23 million. The US pig iron exports had totaled only $7.7 million during the first ten months in 2016. The full year exports had totaled $10.48 million in 2016.
The top three importers of pig iron from the US were Canada, Mexico and India. Canada received a total of $16.81 million, accounting for more than 83% share of total US exports. Also, Canadian imports were up sharply by nearly 174% over the previous year. The exports to Mexico too were up sharply by more than 73% to $1.751 million. The country accounted for 8.66% share of total pig iron exports by the US. In third place was India with imports valued at $823,494. The country’s pig iron imports from the US remained largely stable upon comparison with the previous year.
Among various Customs Districts, Pembina, N.D. shipped the largest volume of pig iron out of the country. The shipments through the Customs District were valued at $9.74 million during Jan-Oct ’17, accounting for 48.15% of all shipments. The other Customs Districts which reported significant shipment volumes were Detroit ($7.005 million) and Laredo ($1.751 million).
Meantime, imports of Pig Iron too witnessed considerable jump during the first ten months of 2017. The imports surged higher from $835.46 million in Jan-Oct ’16 to $1.52 billion through the first ten months of 2017. By value, the imports during this period have already surpassed the full year imports of $947.66 million recorded in 2016.
The key supplier of pig iron to the US was Russia. The US imports from Russia totaled $844.5. The country supplied 55.63% of all pig iron received by the US during Jan-Oct ’17. The imports from Ukraine and Brazil totaled $343.6 million and $252.5 million respectively. South Africa ($37.6 million) and India ($25.3 million) were the other leading exporters of Pig Iron into the US. The cumulative shipments by the above five countries accounted for more than 99% of the total imports by the US during the ten-month period from January to October this year.
The top five Customs Districts in terms of value of imported pig iron by the US were New Orleans, Mobile, Charleston, Cleveland and Chicago. These top five top five Customs districts accounted for nearly 95% of total US pig iron shipments into the country. Nearly 1.44 billion out of the $1.52 billion imports were shipped to these top five customs districts.
