JOHANNESBURG (Scrap Monster): South Africa's gold production dropped 4% year-on-year by volume in June while its total mineral output advanced by 4.2% year-on-year, as per latest data released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) on Wednesday.

According to Stats SA data, country’s seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 7.1% in the second quarter of 2012, compared with the first quarter of this year.

The output of non-gold minerals was 5.3% higher. Production of platinum group metals rose 4.8% in June, a sign that output in the industry is on the rebound after a sharp contraction brought on by a government safety drive.
