Ivory Coast recycling campaign collects over 70 tonnes of e-waste

The four-month collection and awareness campaign organized by the Ericsson and MTN in association with the Ivory Coast Ministry of Environment, Public Health and Sustainability has come to an end.

KAMPALA (Scrap Monster): The four-month collection and awareness campaign organized by the Ericsson and MTN in association with the Ivory Coast Ministry of Environment, Public Health and Sustainability has come to an end. Around 70 tonnes of electronic and electronic equipment waste was collected during the campaign. The campaign was organized with the aim of creating awareness about reducing the environmental impact associated with disposal of used electronic waste.

The 20-foot container at Sorbonne Plateau in the capital Abidjan will remain closed. However, Ericsson and MTN stated that efforts will be on to promote the consciousness achieved during the campaign. To this effect, both companies will discuss with the government and other industry stakeholders in developing a long term program to manage electronic waste in the country.

More than 95% of the materials collected will be recycled. The collected e-waste will be transported to Ericsson approved recycling partner in Durban, South Africa for recovery of precious metals.

The e-waste collection drive was supported by other companies including LMCI, the Port of San Pedro, Prosuma, IPS, Corlay, Sifca, Centaures The Road, Quickcash, Sir-Zetes CI and Franzetti.

A similar collection drive was run by Ericsson and MTN Benin in January last year, collecting over 20 tonnes of discarded electrical and electronic equipment.
