Investors remained cautious amid rangebound gold prices, expectations of prolonged higher US interest rates and robust equity markets, the WGC report noted.

Summary
  • Gold ETFs Attract Record Investment Inflows

Physically backed gold ETFs recorded net inflows of 211 tonnes during Q3 2026, pushing global holdings to a record 4,256 tonnes. Quarterly inflows reached an unprecedented $31 billion, led by European-listed funds with 92 tonnes, followed by North America (81 tonnes) and Asia (34 tonnes).

  • Global Bar and Coin Demand Weakens

Global investment in gold bars and coins declined to 268 tonnes, its weakest quarterly performance in four years. Rangebound gold prices, expectations of prolonged high U.S. interest rates and strong equity markets prompted retail investors to adopt a more cautious approach.

  • India Sees Sharp Decline While China Records Growth

India's physical gold investment demand plunged 40% year-over-year to 55 tonnes in Q3 2026. In contrast, China recorded a 7% increase to 79 tonnes. Despite the quarterly slowdown, global bar and coin demand totaled 1,053 tonnes during the first nine months, marking its strongest performance since 2013.
