SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Canadian lumber producer Conifex Timber has secured up to C$11 million from the federal government under the Regional Tariff Response Initiative to modernize its sawmill in Mackenzie, British Columbia, the company said. The funding comes through Pacific Economic Development Canada.
The package consists of a repayable contribution of up to C$10 million and a non-repayable contribution of up to C$1 million. It will support Conifex's broader modernization program at the mill, including equipment and infrastructure investments meant to raise productivity, efficiency and competitiveness.
In September, Conifex secured a federal loan of up to C$30 million under the Large Enterprise Tariff Loan program to support operations and liquidity. The company cut its second-quarter lumber output by 60% as U.S. trade costs and weak demand hit Canadian softwood lumber producers.
