SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Production at Teck Resources’ Highland Valley Copper mine in British Columbia has been disrupted following the commencement of a workers’ strike. Meanwhile, the operation continues to run at a reduced rate.
The Canadian mining company confirmed the labour action on Saturday It must be noted that a 72-hour strike notice issued by United Steelworkers (USW) Local 7619 expired without a new collective agreement. Negotiations between the company and the union failed to resolve outstanding differences before the deadline.
Approximately 1,200 employees at the mine are represented by the union, according to information published on the USW website.
The dispute centres on compensation and retirement benefits, with the union pressing for higher wages and improved pension provisions. In addition, the union highlighted the difficulties in recruiting and retaining skilled personnel due to staff shortages.
Teck Resources said the eventual effect on production would depend largely on how long the strike continues. The scale of the disruption remains uncertain, and the company has not specified the potential production losses. A prolonged stoppage could create greater production challenges.
In the meantime, the miner reiterated its commitment to reaching a new collective agreement with the union, citing that negotiations remain an important priority for the company. The United Steelworkers had not immediately responded to a request for comment on Saturday.
