SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Borouge International is expanding its mechanical plastics recycling operations in Germany and Austria. The company announced plans to add nearly 14,000 tonnes of annual capacity to strengthen European supplies of recycled polyolefins. The expansion is expected to strengthen the company's European recycling platform.
The investment will increase production at its Niedergebra facility in Germany by approximately 9,000 tonnes annually, boosting output of recycled mixed polyolefins (rPO). The plant processes post-consumer plastic waste into materials used in rigid applications, with the additional capacity scheduled to become operational in the first quarter of 2027.
At its Wildon facility in Austria, the company plans to increase recycled polyethylene (rPE) production by up to 5,000 tonnes annually. The expanded facility is expected to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2027.
The upgrades come as European manufacturers face growing pressure to incorporate recycled content amid changing consumer preferences, supply-chain requirements and regulatory developments, including the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
Borouge International's European recycling network also includes its Elin Pelin facility in Bulgaria, which produces more than 20,000 tonnes of post-consumer recycled polypropylene (rPP) annually.
