What is E-Waste?

In the early days of electronics, it was common for items like televisions and radios to be used in the home for a decade or more. If and when they eventually failed to operate properly, they were often repaired and used for many years afterward.Today’s technology has sparked an electronics industry that has expanded exponentially. The speed of product development has increased to the point that many electronic products are rendered obsolete in just 12018 months. At the current levels of production and with a shorter life span, these devices have created a new breed of toxic trash, sometimes referred to as e-waste. Wikipedia defines e-waste this way, “The term e-waste is applied to all waste from or caused by electronics, which is often toxic waste. It is a major concern with respect to wireless technology and computers, which are readily discarded due to rapid technological change, low initial cost and planned obsolescence. Various less rapid obsolescence are applied.”Items that fall into the category of e-waste include computers, monitors, televisions, pagers, cell phones, stereos, printers, keyboards, mice, speakers, radios, projection equipment, palm pilots, MP3 players, scanners, fax machines, video game consoles, video games, telephones, CD players, VCRs, internet devices, and other similar products.

The Problem of E-waste

Many electronic devices include heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic. If not handled properly, these can poison our environment and threaten the health of individuals and communities.E-waste contains a combination of reusable raw materials as well as toxic materials. The raw materials have value and can be reused to manufacture new products. However, it can be extremely labor intensive and very expensive to extract the value of these materials from such devices. This is the reason millions of tons of e-waste have been exported to third world countries, where it is often handled by children in unsafe and toxic environments.

In recent years, organizations such as the “Basel Action network” or (BAN) have lifted this issue to the attention of World leaders. When it comes to handling and discarding e-waste, the problem still exists, but it is improving, as more people become aware of the impact e-waste has on the world. The methods in which e-waste is handled is fast becoming one of the largest concerns within the scope of social and environmental responsibilities of all nations.

Governments, cities, and towns are now starting to take a proactive approach to handling e-waste. For examples, the majority of consumes know that is illegal to dispose of televisions, computer monitors, and other cathode ray tube devices in most landfills. However, many of these same consumers have accumulated piles of e-waste in their homes and businesses because there has not been an effective and convenient method for disposal. In fact most people are unsure what to do with these products, since they can no longer be dumped in our landfills. According to the California Integrated Waste Management Board, “… some researchers estimate that nearly 75 percent of old electronics are in storage, in part because of the uncertainty of how to manage materials.”

In 2005 the State of California passed legislation designed protect our environment, our citizens, and the world community, from unsafe e-waste disposal practices. This legislation has created a network of approved e-waste collectors and recyclers, to handle our e-waste in a safe and responsible manner. ERS is proud member of this network. According to the CIWMB, this new program is working! It has been reported in 2005, 65.8 million pounds were claimed and in 2006, 97.4 million pounds were claimed (represents activities through third quarter) within the State of California.

How does ERS handle E-Waste?

ERS provides professional, convenient, innovative, and efficient e-waste recovery services to individuals and businesses. We are developing new methods of collection, which will make the process of e-waste recycling simple and routine. Currently, our collection services include free electronic recycling events throughout Northern California, drive thru drop-off locations in West Sacramento and Rancho Cordova, e-waste and surplus equipment removal services for businesses, organizations, and government agencies.

Prior to recycling materials, ERS will attempt to evaluate each item for potential re-use. In many cases, items collected by ERS have not yet reached the end-of-life stage. Every effort is made to ensure these items are re-circulated into an environment in which economic advantages can be gained by end users and people in need. This step also helps to extend the life span of certain types of products. When items reach the end-of-life stage, they are broken down to the level of raw materials. All potentially toxic e-waste collected by ERS is processed and recycled within the State of California using environmentally friendly systems. ERS does not use exports and landfills as options for e-waste disposal.

ERS does not accept the following items:

Microwaves, household appliances, smoke detectors,  fans, lamps, light fixtures, fluorescent tubes, light bulbs, vacuum cleaners, house hold batteries or furniture.
