Southeastern Indiana Recycling District - North Ve

4800 St. Rd. #3 , North Vernon, Indiana, United States |

Formerly, the Southeastern Indiana Solid Waste District (SISWD), the Southeastern Indiana Recycling District (SEIRD) offers the same great recycling center opportunities along with reuse stores, Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and pharmaceutical waste disposal, disaster debris management, youth and adult environmental education, and free-standing co-mingled containers throughout several of our counties.

We're now commingled! Recycling containers at the Jennings County Recycling Center are now set up for commingled recycling. Not only can collection trucks hold considerable more materials in a single load, but new recycling technology allows materials to be sorted later at a central location. An added bonus is that the Jennings Co. Recycling Center can now accept #3-#7 plastics along with its traditional #1-#2.

SEIRD Recycling Centers are no longer accepting any oil-based paints and stains except on designated HHW collection days. Fluorescent tubes and bulbs are the only HHW dropoff items accepted during regular business hours. In addition, any unlabeled/unidentifiable items or latex paints will no longer be accepted. There is no charge for this service.

The Southeastern Indiana Recycling District’s mission is 'To preserve and enhance our environment, natural resources, and public health and safety, by leading in the proper management of solid waste. Our goals are to 'Coordinate the implementation of integrated solid waste management systems; Support and coordinate all existing municipal and county recycling efforts throughout the district; Promote the availability of reasonable priced competitive and effective recycling, composting collection and recycling services within the District; Educate the public, particularly schoolchildren, in the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling to preserve our environment; Encourage voluntary participation in recycling, reduction and reuse; Encourage the development of environmentally sound solid waste management programs in business and industry.'

Special Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collections at the Batesville Center was the first Saturday in March of 2016.Summer 2016 Schedule: Saturday, August 6 Franklin Cty Recycle Center from 8:00-10:00am. Ripley Cty Center (Osgood) from 11:00am-1:00pm.

Pharmaceutical waste disposal including non-controlled and controlled medications, syringes, etc. are accepted at the following locations in Ripley and Franklin counties: Ripley County Sheriff and Health Departments, Franklin County Sheriff and Health Departments, Batesville Police Department, and Margaret Mary Hospital.

Services

The Southeastern Indiana Recycling District (SEIRD) exists to promote and practice good environmental stewardship throughout Franklin, Jefferson, Jennings, Ohio, Ripley, Scott, and Switzerland Counties. Our efforts focus upon preserving and enhancing our environment, natural resources, and public health and safety by leading in the proper management of solid waste. This may be accomplished through the practice of recycling, the reuse of satisfactory items and ultimately the reduction of materials entering our landfills.

Currently SEIRD operates and staffs seven recycling centers and eight reuse centers throughout seven counties.

SEIRD partners with county sheriff, police, and health departments to be collection sites for pharmaceutical waste. Residents have access to drop boxes that are available throughout the district for controlled and non-controlled medication disposal 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

Household hazardous waste disposal (HHW) opportunities are provided throughout the district, with three special collection days available per year. Residents of all our serviced counties are encouraged to drop HHW off at the Jefferson County Recycling Center year-around during normal business hours.

Youth and adult education is an important facet of SEIRD. Recycling educators are on staff to teach residents about recycling in school classrooms, businesses, community meetings and events, and through club or church functions. In the photo atthe right, South Ripley Elementary School receive a prize of a planted tree from SEIRD. The students went above and beyond in SEIRD’s educational recycling challenge, earning them their choice of prizes for their school.

SEIRD places recycling containers at various locations throughout the district. Since most of the district is rural, stand-alone receptacles allow for recycling in remote parts of the counties without having to drive a great distance to a recycling center.

In an effort to fully serve its district, SEIRD partners alongside the Indiana Department of Homeland Security to assist in the removal of debris that Mother Nature’s fury sometimes leaves behind. The role of SEIRD is to not only help remove disaster debris but also to assess the degree and expense of the damages to any given region.

Indiana Recycles

The Southeastern Indiana Recycling District (SEIRD) extends recycling opportunities to the residents of their seven-county district including the collection of materials such as: mixed paper; newspapers; magazines; aluminum and steel cans; plastics; electronics; clear, brown, & green glass containers; cardboard and paperboard; and more. SEIRD also accepts hard to dispose of items including refrigerated appliances, televisions and VCRs, microwaves, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, oil and antifreeze, and rechargeable batteries.

SEIRD operates and staffs seven recycle centers throughout its district. Centers are available in Franklin, Jefferson, Jennings, Ripley, Scott, and Switzerland Counties. Each SEIRD recycle center has different business hours and may collect difference types of recyclables.

Reuse - Another Good Way to Recycle

The Southeastern Indiana Recycling District (SEIRD) offers residents of serviced counties the “ultimate” recycling opportunity through their Reuse Centers. Centers are located in Franklin, Jennings, Ohio, Ripley, Scott and Switzerland Counties. A Building Materials Reuse Center is also available at the Switzerland/Ohio County Recycle Center in East Enterprise.

Clean, gently used merchandise in good condition can be dropped off during the center’s normal business hours. Clothing, shoes, books, office supplies, videos/CDs, knick-knacks, and non-upholstered furniture are just a few of the items that are accepted at SEIRD Reuse Centers.

The SEIRD Building Materials Reuse Center in East Enterprise can accept a variety of items including fixtures, windows, doors, sinks, nails, tools, building supplies, and more.

All county residents can “shop” in their county reuse center once a week during a 20-minute visit. Four items, five books, and unlimited amounts of clothing are available at no charge. Two units per week can be obtained from the Building Materials Reuse Center at no charge. Reuse Center merchandise is for personal use only, and should not be resold.

SEIRD Reuse Centers are the perfect way for residents to save money, natural resources, and energy by attaining new owners for merchandise that would otherwise have to be replaced on store shelves.
