Shoreway Environmental Center

South Bay Recycling, LLC, (SBR) is a joint venture between Recology Inc. (Recology) and Potential Industries Inc. (Potential Industries), both of which are experienced operators of mixed waste Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), commingled residential and commercial recyclables MRFs, and transfer stations. This partnership brings together the strengths of Recology and Potential Industries to achieve Recology’s vision of a world without waste.

Recology is an employee-owned company dedicated to building exceptional resource ecosystems that protect the environment and sustain communities. With approximately 40 operating subsidiaries, Recology provides collection, hauling, processing, composting, and disposal services to homes and businesses in the Western United States. Recology also manages municipal processes and services, including urban cleaning services, collection, sorting, transfer, recovery, and landfill management. Potential Industries has evolved from a traditional buyback recycling center to embrace residential commingled processing, and secure additional markets through paper mill development. As such, Potential Industries is able to optimize recycling, maximize diversion, and guarantee the strongest markets for materials. Potential Industries was founded in Los Angeles as a privately held corporation in 1975. Potential is a full service diversified recycling company that operates four MRFs in Southern California. Suppliers of recyclable materials to Potential Industries include: municipalities, waste disposal companies, certified recycling centers, commercial and industrial accounts, and MRFs. The Company processes over 300,000 tons of recyclable material per year. Potential Industries also has Joint Venture partnerships with a newsprint mill and a tissue mill, both in China.

SBR’s technologies and single stream processing methods allow for efficient sorting and recovery of recyclable materials to meet the demands of sustainable communities and State-mandated diversion goals.

The Shoreway Environmental Center is a state-of-the-art recycling and transfer station facility. We offer residents and businesses a conveniently located option for disposing of unwanted items. Recycling the most material possible is our highest priority.

The Shoreway Facility is owned by the South Bayside Waste Management Authority (RethinkWaste), a joint powers authority with twelve member agencies (the cities of Belmont, Burlingame, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Menlo Park, Redwood City, San Carlos, and San Mateo, the towns of Atherton and Hillsborough, the County of San Mateo and the West Bay Sanitary District).

The Shoreway Facility is open to the public and provides ability for residents, businesses, contractors and individuals to bring trash and recyclable materials for processing and transfer to permitted landfills and other processing facilities for further separation and marketing of materials to end users.The Shoreway Environmental Center is open to the public. Our friendly staff is on hand to direct you to the right area within the facility and can assist you with any questions you may have.

Transfer Station

The “Transfer Station” is the place to bring construction & demolition materials, yard trimmings, appliances, tires, scrap metal mattresses and trash. Once you drop your materials off, our team ensures they are properly recycled or disposed.

Residential and Commercial Colection Services

Recology of San Mateo began providing residential and commercial collection services on January 1, 2011 to South Bay Waste Management Authority (RethinkWaste.org) member agencies. For more information please visit www.recologysanmateocounty.com.

Waste Prevention

Waste prevention and reuse are just as important as recycling. If you can’t prevent or reuse something, than make sure you recycle it. It saves money and resources when it isn’t created in the first place.Thrift shops and charitable organizations will generally accept used items in good condition for reuse and resale. Because “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure,” as the old saying goes, taking your unwanted items to your local charity is a smart idea that can prevent waste and help others in need.
