The Lost Creek Mining Story

Our story began over ten years ago, with a group of longtime friends. All wilderness enthusiasts, and rockhounds, who had heard stories of troves of clear and blue topaz hidden in the Lost Creek Wilderness. Years were spent in the casual pursuit of the elusive mineral, while enjoying backpacking and fishing. While we never found the topaz, we honed our geology and prospecting skills, and made valuable mineral discoveries outside of the wilderness. Soon after, one of the group decided to bring these discoveries to market. Jason Roys started Lost Creek Mining in 2014, and was joined in 2015 by longtime friend and original group member Ian Schimpfle. We have a passion for all aspects of mining and minerals. In Jason’s case, it seems to run in the family.

Jason’s Grandfather Camillo Roys was a career coal miner. He was known to stay in the southern Colorado towns of Valdez and Morley (both coal towns now gone), and probably worked in the Frederick mine, among others. At age 12, he began work in the coal mines hooking up mule teams to haul ore. He worked his way up to digging and tunneling, and eventually to blasting. He had an excellent work ethic in the mine, and never lost time due to injury in over 20 years, despite commonly working 64 hours a week. He also loved rocks and minerals and collected them to put in his yard and make jewelry out of them. Sadly, after many years, like so many other coal miners, Mr. Camilo Roys succumbed to black lung. But his memory endures as one of the true grit miners of yesteryear.

At Lost Creek Mining, we proudly continue that tradition, with hard work, a love for rocks and minerals, and a respect for the land. Most of our minerals were discovered, mined, and cleaned by us. We specialize in mining in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, but our quest for the best gems takes us far and wide. We are pleased to bring you Earth’s treasures, direct from the mine, to you!
