Heber Light & Power Co

31 South 100 West, Heber, Utah, United States | Electric Power

Heber Light & Power is a community owned Utah Energy Services Interlocal providing service to more than 11,000 customers in the beautiful Heber Valley. Formed in 1909 by the communities of Heber City, Midway City, and Charleston Town, the company continues to operate the transmission and distribution system spanning 100 square miles in Wasatch County. The utility's service area spans east to the top of Timber Lakes, west to Swiss Mountain Estates and Oak Haven in Midway City, south to Daniel's Canyon, and north to Coyote Lane.

Our Power Portfolio

Heber Light & Power owns and operates three hydroelectric generators and three natural gas power plants with an overall generating capacity of 18 megawatts. In addition to the company owned generation, a power purchase agreement with the Central Utah Water Conservancy District provides HL&P's system with the Jordanelle Dam's hydroelectric capacity of up to 12 megawatts.

Heber Light & Power customers received 38 percent of their energy from renewable resources in 2015. Over 45 percent of the company's resources will be renewable in 2016, beating even the most stringent energy standards across the country.

Looking to the Future

As the population within the Heber Valley grows, energy usage within the valley continues to reach new highs. HL&P continues to seek cost effective, reliable, and carbon free resources to fulfil growing needs. The company strives to offer programs that support energy conservation, efficiency, and distributed generation throughout the valley.

Mission

The Company's mission is to be a leader in the Public Power Industry by safely providing reasonable rates and reliable energy with an emphasis on environmental responsibility, transparency, and a commitment to values and community while maintaining a highly skilled and motivated workforce.

Hydro

HL&P recieves up to 45 percent of its energy supply from various hydropower projects including Federally owned hydropower plants, hydropower coming from the Jordanelle Project, and three small Company owned hydropower plants.

Pleasant Valley Wind

HL&P purchases power from the Pleasant Valley Wind Farm located in Uintah County, Wyoming. Wind purchases are made by UAMPS members through the Firm Power Supply Project which supplies UAMPS members with energy from various power supplies. This wind farm is the largest in Wyoming with 80 Vesta V80, 1.8 megawatt wind turbines capable of generating 144 megawatts.

HL&P Natural Gas Power Plants

In 1987, HL&P purchased its first four natural gas generators as a means to provide reliable standby power during emergencies. Since that time, natural gas generation has become increasingly important to the company as it provides a cost effective power supply during periods of peak demand.

Today, HL&P owns and operates three power plants with 13 megawatts of natural gas generation located at the operations facility. Having the generation on-site allows employees to make the most economical hourly energy resource decisions, and saves the company transmission and scheduling costs.

Peak Shaving

A system peak can refer to the highest energy requirements that a system has in one day, in a month, season, or year. The HL&P energy portfolio must provide enough energy to meet the needs of its customers at the best price possible. This means that energy resources must be shaped to meet the system's various load requirements throughout the day.

Natural Gas generation provides an efficient and economical means of meeting the sytem load without having to buy expensive market power on peak and also prevents over-buying base load power.

Emissions

The three HL&P Natural Gas Power Plants are operated beneath the limits of a strict minor polutant source permit regulated by the Department of Air Quality.
