Our History
From a firm of two, to a consultancy of over 250 professionals, Hemmera has consistently been involved with some of the toughest and most interesting projects in the industry.
With offices in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and the Yukon, we are growing, innovating, and leading our field. We still serve our very first clients, as well as governments of all levels and a broad spectrum of industries. Our original vision has developed and expanded, but remains, at its core, to help our clients face the challenges of environmental guidelines and legislation with practical, economical, forward-looking solutions.
In 1994, Paul Hemsley left his position as director of what is now the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency and established a new company with a unique vision – to help organizations navigate Canada’s increasingly complex environmental guidelines and legislation. Hemmera immediately gained its first clients: Transport Canada and BC Hydro. Two decades later, those valued clients are still with Hemmera, and have since been accompanied by a long and growing list of other valued, long-term clients.
As the firm attracted both qualified specialists and more clients, Hemmera took on increasingly more ambitious projects, including environmental baseline studies for one of the first diamond projects in the Northwest Territories. Diversification was key to Hemmera’s organic growth, as exemplified by the contributions to the remediation of a Canadian Airlines facility, which garnered industry-wide recognition for Hemmera’s contaminated sites experts.

Our depth of experience and our multi-disciplinary approach allow us provide accurate and appropriate legal or management guidance, and to steer projects through the complex assessment and regulatory processes in a timely and cost-effective process. We are skilled in dealing with regulators, as well as in managing complex consultations and negotiations between government agencies and stakeholders, First Nations, and the public.
