Giving Mining Tires a New Life
TiReCo is tackling the challenge of end-of-life mining tires by transforming waste into valuable products. With thousands of tires stockpiled every year in Alberta's oil sands, our mission is to build sustainable, scalable recycling solutions that benefit industry, communities, and the environment.
Our Approach
Comprehensive Tire Recycling Solutions
TiReCo is part of Avatar Innovations Studio 2025. Founded to solve one of Canada's toughest industrial waste problems: giant off-the-road (OTR) mining tires. Across the oil sands, more than 3,500 tires reach end-of-life each year, and over 21,000 are currently stockpiled. These tires can take centuries to break down and pose serious environmental challenges.
We're building a centralized solution in Fort McMurray to collect, process, and repurpose these tires into high-value products from steel and Tire-Derived Fuel (TDF) to Tire-Derived Aggregate (TDA) and Tire-Derived Polymer (TDP).
Our vision is to close the loop, creating economic opportunities while reducing environmental impact.
With advanced shredding equipment, TiReCo can process up to 10 tonnes of tire material per hour. Each mining tire contains about 20% recoverable steel, representing a significant revenue stream alongside rubber-based products.
