Applied Plasma Technologies (APT) is a U.S. research and development company headquartered in Marshall, Virginia, in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
The company was founded in 2003 on the intellectual property developed by its co-founder, Dr. Igor Matveev. Dr. Matveev is a world-renowned specialist with more than 40 years of experience in the field of plasma-assisted technologies R&D, marketing, and organization of mass production of innovative products.

APT follows a distinctive technology development philosophy. Rather than relying on external funding to initiate new ideas, the company consistently invests its own resources to create, mature, and de-risk advanced plasma technology platforms before transitioning them into industrial and government development programs. This approach has enabled APT to build a substantial technology base while significantly reducing technical risk for future partners.
Our leading staff has accumulated more than 200 cumulative years of experience in development and manufacturing of plasma-assisted combustion systems for gas turbines and boilers, technologies for synthesis of nanomaterials, treatment of powders, gasification, plasma chemical processing of gases and solids.
We were the first in the world who developed and commercialized plasma ignition systems and equipped over 15 types of gas turbines to improve their reliability and safety. Our plasma fuel nozzle became a prototype for the fifth-generation fighter.
Beginning in 1989, APT conducted high-altitude testing on three types of aircraft engines and proved unbeatable advantages of new technology for security and reliability improvement of flights.
Our Transient Arc Plasma Torch is a major breakthrough in plasma technologies with power up to 1 kW, which could provide dramatically extended lifetime of electrodes and wider range of operating parameters.
APT's flagship technology platform is a new generation of high-power ICP/RF plasma systems for long-life, electrode-free operation at atmospheric and elevated pressures using a broad range of plasma gases. The technology supports industrial applications including waste conversion, strategic mineral processing, advanced materials synthesis, aerospace testing, and emerging space systems.
In December 2022, APT completed Phase I of its new Plasma Technology Center in Marshall, Virginia. The facility includes a 6,000 sq. ft. production building and a 4,000 sq. ft. testing building designed for ICP/RF plasma systems up to 500 kW. The facility is equipped with 2.5 MW of electrical service to support large-scale industrial plasma development.
Recycling Lithium-Ion Batteries
Our plasma-based recycling technology enables efficient and environmentally friendly processing of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries. High-temperature plasma breaks down battery components into elemental and reusable materials such as cobalt, nickel, lithium, and graphite. This approach minimizes emissions and avoids hazardous chemical processing.
Processing Electronic Waste (E-Waste)
Plasma technology is also ideal for processing electronic waste, such as printed circuit boards, cables, and consumer electronics. Our systems vaporize plastics and separate valuable metals like gold, copper, and rare earth elements for recovery.
