Mid Michigan Waste Authority

MISSION AND HISTORY

Mid Michigan Waste Authority grew out of a vision shared by a group of public works directors who were interested in offering or improving their community’s curbside solid waste collection services. As the professionals charged with overseeing municipal public services, they knew they could secure better prices and a wider array of services if they joined together to hire a waste hauler. Their idea became a reality in 1991, when the Mid Michigan Waste Authority – then known as the Saginaw Area Solid Waste Management Authority – was formed.

Since then, 34 member communities in the greater Saginaw Valley have joined together to provide their residents with convenient, economical, safe, and environmentally-conscious curbside solid waste collection services. MMWA provides this service to nearly 70,000 residential properties.

Today, the Authority accomplishes its objectives through the efforts of a dedicated staff and an engaged board of trustees.

While residents will see Waste Management’s green trucks and Priority Waste’s yellow trucks collecting their curbside materials, it is the MMWA staff that handles the administration, contract management, education, programming, and customer service needs of the nearly 200,000 residents it serves.

The Authority is committed to educating residents about the benefits of recycling, reuse and waste reduction, and believes that being a strong community partner is the first step in sharing that message. Community outreach efforts include free trash and recycling educational presentations to schools in its 34 member communities; presentations to neighborhood associations, community groups, churches, and other organizations; and participation in community events including festivals, farmers’ markets, family nights, library programs, parks and recreation activities, and more.
