Waste Watchers of the Eastern Shore of Virginia
PO Box 191, Onancock, Virginia, United States | Waste Collection & Disposal
Waste Watchers is an independent, non-profit volunteer community group that promotes the responsible disposal and recycling of waste on the Eastern Shore of VA
Founders & Officers
In 2006, Citizens for a Better Eastern Shore (CBES) began a Recycling Committee to focus on recycling on the Shore, including creating the iconic red “Recycling” cans for special events, led by CBES then-President Paul Driscoll and then-Board members Betsy Pinder and Errin Sullivan.
By 2009, Jenny O’Neill had joined the group, which officially became Waste Watchers of the Eastern Shore, as a “grass roots community group to promote responsible disposal of waste.” Jenny served as Waste Watchers’ first president.
Early efforts by Waste Watchers included:
• Recycling at special events, including teaming up with The Nature Conservancy to recycle oyster and clam shells
• Reviving Food Lion’s program to recycle plastic bags and adding the program for Accomack County convenience centers
• Promoting “Did You Remember Your Bag?” signs for grocery store parking lots
• Writing the “Trash Talk” column.
• Organizing citizen “eco-walks” to pick up litter as they hike
• Community meetings on litter and recycling
