Plastic is one of the most discarded items of trash. From water bottles to plastic wrappers, the discarded items fill land fills and natural environments, including oceans, all over the world. In the ocean alone, almost 8 million metric tons of plastic end up there annually according to a 2015 study from the University of California Santa Barbara.

380 million tons of plastic is produced every year. However, companies, like Shelby’s, are finding uses for the recycled plastic and rubber so the waste does not end up in landfills or natural environments. The fashion industry uses plastic bottles to turn into polyester yarn and uses the yarn to make clothes. Plastic is also used in plastic composite roofing materials instead of tradition asphalt shingles. Recycled plastic bags, bottles, and milk jugs can become playground equipment, park benches, plastic lumber, and even more recycling bins to recycle more plastic!

Recycled rubber can be used in hospital floors to decrease noise and provide comfort to medical staff and patients, infrastructure for rubberized asphalt on roadways to provide more durability and less traffic noise while driving, playground surfaces like mats and mulch to cushion children’s falls, and agriculture for windbreaks, sheds, and feeders. There are endless possibilities to find uses for recycled materials.

Exactly how is Shelby’s helping find uses for recycled plastic and rubber? 

Shelby’s uses only two materials for our boards – recycled tire rubber and plastic. Everyday, we use about 1,500 discarded tires and 288,000 milk jugs containers to produce our boards. During the year, we use an estimated 312,000 tires and 59,904,000 milk jugs! All our raw materials are only sourced in the USA. While during the production of the boards, there are no chemicals added and no waste produced.
