Southern Oregon Food Solutions

Our mission is to minimize food waste in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

We do this by working in community to educate and inspire action for food production, usage, and disposal.

By closing the gaps in our food cycle, we’ll be able to adapt and stay strong, and be a supportive, more self sufficient, sustainable community.

We, Southern Oregon Food Solutions (SOFS), started out as a group of people who engaged with the curriculum of Project Drawdown – a renowned book by Paul Hawken. Of the solutions presented, we decided to focus on reducing food waste which is ranked #3 as the most effective ways to fight climate change when measures are scaled up. Food waste accounts for 8% of the world’s green house gas emissions.

This idea of food waste reduction is taking hold all over the country and all over the world. At the recent COP 26 at Glasgow in November 2021, one of the goals agreed upon included a 50% reduction in food waste by 2030 according to the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO).

We continue to work to ensure that our precious food resources are not wasted.

By focusing on three main areas:

• reducing and preventing food waste,
• including composting to keep it out of landfills,
• promoting local – sustainably grown food,
• and addressing food surpluses –

we’ll be able to close the gaps in our food cycle, and be a more resilient community.
