Wilmington Compost Company

The grassroots movement of Wilmington Compost Company traces back to the days our founder, Riley Alber, spent wandering the woods of Southern New Jersey as a boy. Growing up in the Garden State, surrounded by forest, farmland, and water, Riley’s childhood provided a unique balance of outdoor influences that constantly drew him outside of the house into nature. Alber majored in Environmental Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Upon graduating, he found himself working on a local small-scale, sustainable farm. Through this journey, he developed clarity and an intense desire to take action to close a loop in the circle of sustainability. Thus, Wilmington Compost Company was born est. 2018.

Since the early days, WCC has grown to become a family business, compost operation, and mission. Located on their family farm land “Piney Run Farms”, located in Rocky Point, NC you will find the home to Wilmington Compost Company. Daily farm activities will include food waste being diverted from local landfills, land clearing debris being dropped off by local contractors, and windrows actively decomposing an array of organic materials to create healthy living soils.

By reducing greenhouse gases and revitalizing nutrient-depleted soils, we can positively impact climate change. Through these actions, we can increase the long-term health of our soils, air, and water, ultimately protecting our environments for the benefit of future generations.

Community

Utilizing composting as a bridge between communities and lifestyles to increase education, foster relationships, and raise awareness about the benefits of composting, especially when we work together. 

Health & balance

Enhancing the health of our ecosystems and environments helps to enrich the food we grow, the air we breathe, and the waters we drink. In creating a healthy, conscious-consumer approach, we can begin to experience the impacts of a balanced lifestyle. 

Economy

There are numerous existing and emerging benefits to the economic impacts composting creates. Growing ‘closed-loop systems’  can be mutually valuable, generate and maintain jobs, produce higher quality and yields of food, and much more.
