Multimetco Inc

2511 S Broadway, Santa Ana, California, United States | Scrap Metal Recycling

Multimetco's corporate offices and main manufacturing facilities are located in Anniston, Alabama. The Plant is conveniently located near interstate 20 approximately half way between Birmingham, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia. Multimetco also operates purchasing facilities, partnerships, and warehouse locations located throughout the United States and world.

Multimetco purchases scrapped Automobile Catalytic Converters and recovers the precious metals contained in the catalyst inside the converters. The catalyst inside the converters is either alumina or cordierite ceramic substrates coated with low concentrations of three metals, platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Multimetco also recovers precious metals from spent petroleum refining catalyst, particularly, alumina catalyst. Multimetco will purchase the converters and catalyst or process the catalyst on a Toll-Refining basis and return the recovered precious metals to the owner for a processing fee.

Multimetco also sells ALU-CAL - Fused Calcium Aluminate and 409 Stainless Steel from the scrapped automobile catalytic converter hulls. ALU-CAL is the trade name for fused calcium aluminate which is sold to steel manufacturers for desulferizing steel. ALU-CAL is available for shipment in supersacks or bulk trailer loads. Stainless steel from scrapped automobile catalytic converter hulls is sold in trailer loads.

Multimetco has a patented process for reclaiming precious metals from the catalyst. The heart of the recovery operation is a plasma arc furnace. The catalyst materials are fed into the plasma arc furnace. A 10,000 degree centigrade electric flame moves across the surface of the catalyst heating them to temperatures that range from 1,500 to 1,600 degrees centigrade. The plasma arc is moved above the molten bath to distribute the tremendously intense heat over the entire surface, keeping the bath fluid and providing a stirring effect, causing the precious metals to collect together and settle to the bottom of the furnace in a layer of molten metal. The slag flows continuously form the furnace, is cooled, crushed and sold to steel manufacturers for use in manufacturing high grade steel. The precious metal alloy is tapped, cooled, milled, then refined into Platinum, Palladium and Rhodium.

OUR HISTORY

In July, 1989, Multimetco purchased the precious metals refinery from Texasgulf Minerals and Metals, a subsidiary of the large French oil and chemical company Elf Aquitaine, Inc. The plasma arc furnace was developed during the 1970's to recover precious metals from scrapped automobile catalytic converters, which began appearing on automobiles in the 1970's. Multimetco has continually modified and improved the plasma arc technology to better recover precious metals from automobile catalytic converters as well as from several other types of catalyst as well.
