Afatek

Afatek takes care of sorting out 90 percent of all metals in the slag. The metals are recovered and used for new products. The remaining mineral material is recycled as slag gravel, which can replace newly mined gravel in, for example, road construction.

Afatek is a practical collaboration between the companies Vestforbrænding, Norfors, ARGO, AffaldPlus and Refa.Afatek is responsible for the overall task of transporting the raw slag from the incinerators to Afatek's slag sites, operating the slag sites with maturing the slag, sorting metals and storing the slag in an intermediate depot until the slag can be used as a gravel material for road construction.

It is Afatek's task to ensure that the slag, which is a residual product from the incineration of residual waste, is utilized in the best possible way.Afatek, with support from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency and the Innovation Fund, in collaboration with universities and technology companies at home and abroad, has developed methods for better utilization of the resources in the slag. One result of the development work is the construction of a very efficient sorting plant in 2015, which can recover a very large part of the metals that are in the slag.The mineral part of the slag has also been developed to a level where it can replace the best natural products such as stable gravel. Slag gravel is used for the construction of roads and similar construction works and is in the process of being product certified.Afatek has thus succeeded in achieving a significant improvement in the value of the slag both in relation to the climate and the economy. A significant reduction in the CO2 load is achieved when metals are recovered, and slag gravel can replace gravel from the gravel pits.
