Crown Coal and Coke Company is a leading sales agent for metallurgical and steam coal. Since 1920, we have maintained an independent sales role in the coal and coke market for steel, utility and industrial applications. Steam coal, used in the production of electricity, is sold primarily on the basis of its BTUs, sulfur and ash content. Metallurgical coal, or coking coal, is used in the process of producing coke, and is sold on the basis of its carbon, sulfur, ash and volatile content.

Differing coals can be blended to produce the right range of coke specifications. Crown Coal and Coke Company, through its knowledge of the coking process, is an experienced evaluator of metallurgical coals and their value in the coal market.

Coke is made from low ash, sulfur and phosphorus coking coals, which have certain physical properties that cause them to soften, liquefy and then re-solidify into hard but porous lumps when heated in the absence of air. A coke's value is based upon is moisture, ash, sizing, carbon, stability and volatile content.

Initially, Crown owned and operated coal mines and Beehive coke ovens supplying the railroads, the domestic steel industry, and local utilities. Strong relationships developed over the years with Crown growing its markets with a reputation for honest, ethical and confidential dealings.
