The Cypher Company

The cypher company was established in pittsburgh, pa by robert w. Cypher in 1946, and incorporated in 1953.  The focus was supplying hydraulic hose with reusable fittings, lubrication equipment and other consumable items to the construction, quarry, deep and strip mining industries. 

The cypher company was one of the first distributors offering hydraulic hose and reusable fittings in the tri-state area (pa, wv, oh).  These efforts substantially expanded our customer base and created additional opportunities for us to serve other industries.

In the late 1960’s, longwall mining systems from europe were being installed in the tri-state area (pa, wv, oh).  The cypher company was the first independent distributor, in 1973, to offer staple-lock adapters and hose assemblies as replacement parts to the longwall coal mine operators. The coal mining industry has always been a significant segment of our business, as is today. 

Robert g. Cypher, current president and son of founder robert w. Cypher, uses keystone name (the cypher company’s logo) and markets a cypher private branded hose. Complete with mpt, jic, staple-lock, slimline, slimlock, flush-fit, groove-lok, and shell-lok hose connections to service the requirements of longwall mining systems now operating in the usa. 

In 1980, the cypher company expanded our product line to include industrial hose, fittings and accessories. The cypher company now has hose fitting crimping capabilities from 3/16” id to 12” id with a 150-lb flange installed.

In 1998, a 6,400 sq ft warehouse and assembly facility was opened in price, utah; to service the long-wall mines in the western united states.

The cypher company’s main office, warehouse and facility is located in monroeville, pennsylvania. The monroeville location has 56,000 square feet of warehouse space and multi-million dollar hose, fittings and accessories inventory.

To service the oil and gas exploration, wireline and fracking contractors industry, the cypher company’s monroeville, pa location, provides frack-iron sales and recertification including an online customer tracking portal.
