Georgia-Pacific Announced Major Capital Investment in Alabama River Cellulose Mill
Since its acquisition in 2010, the company has invested more than $700 million in the mill facility.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Georgia-Pacific announced a major capital investment project at its Alabama River Cellulose Mill located in Perdue Hill, Alabama. The proposed $800 million investment is aimed at modernizing, expanding and streamlining the facility’s production capabilities.
The Alabama River Cellulose mill will become the biggest and most technologically sophisticated softwood pulp mill in the nation as a result of the investment project. It is anticipated that the project will start in the fourth quarter of 2025 and be finished by 2027.

A new, cutting-edge digester, pulp drier, and more energy-efficient power boiler are also installed as part of the investment. Additionally, improvements and changes will be made to the lime kiln, recovery boiler, evaporators, and brown stock washing and recausticizing systems.
It is anticipated that the expansion and modernisation projects will increase the production capacity by about 300 tonnes per day. As a result, the mill will be able to produce about one million tonnes of market pulps and fluff annually.
Over the next several years, it is anticipated that the demand for softwood pulp products will increase by 3% annually. Georgia-Pacific hopes to meet the increased demand with this investment.
