Powerful Fire Destroys Scrap Metal Facility In Camden Co.

The building that burned down was on 610 Route 130, in the West Collingswood Heights section of Haddon Township.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Fire ripped through the roof and destroyed a scrap metal facility Saturday morning in West Collingswood Heights.

The fire emerged around 5 a.m. a Route 130 building belonging to Sgt. Scrap, a South Jersey scrap metal dealer.

First responders found heavy flames roaring from the roof of the garage-like building. The fire was controlled in a little over an hour, but the building was destroyed, officials said.

In the end, the roof and many of the walls collapsed, reducing the facility to rubble mixed with the piles of scrap metal that were inside.

No injuries were reported, according to the Gloucester City Fire Department — one of several departments that battled the two-alarm fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Gloucester City firefighters tested nearby air quality Saturday morning and found it was in an acceptable range. Air monitoring continued throughout the day.

Sgt. Scrap describes itself as a mobile scrap metal service, collecting scrap metal at its facilities and picking it up at different locations.

The company also has a facility in Pennsauken, which remains open.

'Thank you for all the support and heartfelt messages In this unfortunate time,' Sgt. Scrap said on social media. 'We are raising our prices to offset the extra time it may cause you to come to our Pennsauken location. Hopefully you all will continue to sell your scrap to us while we are rebuilding our Route 130 location. We need you all now more then ever.'
