New Hanover County, NC Operation Launches to Keep Recyclables Out of Landfill

The recyclables are collected by solid waste staff at the landfill’s customer convenience site and recycling facility and are tested to ensure they work appropriately.

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): A space is opening that will allow the public a chance to scoop up reusable items before they hit the county’s landfill. Called Treasure Island, the space is in a garage at Recycling and Solid Waste headquarters at 3002 Highway 421 North in Wilmington. The facility will open to the public the second Saturday of each month, 9 a.m. to noon, allowing residents to scoop up items for free on a first-come, first-served basis.

Items will include power tools, sports equipment, patio furniture, dishes, paint, wall art, books, TVs, household electronics and much more.

“Recycling is important to limiting what materials go into our landfill, but sometimes there are unwanted items that can still be of use but are difficult to recycle or have limited resale value,” according to recycling and solid waste director, Joe Suleyman. “This program allows these items to get a second chance, keeping them out of the landfill at no cost to the person picking them up, which is certainly a positive for everyone.”
