New Digital System for Waste Shipments to Impact Recyclers

The system will help streamline cross-border shipments of waste within the EU and curb illegal waste shipments across borders.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The new digital waste shipment system, DIWASS, contains comprehensive regulations that have been approved by the European Commission (EC). After May of the following year, the system specifies the guidelines for exports of recycled materials to and from the EU region and third nations.

All trash transportation paperwork must pass through a central EU digital network, per the new system. Before shipping, all non-EU businesses must register with an EU entity. Strict guidelines for user access, authentication, and long-term data storage are also introduced.

With digital systems completely replacing paper procedures, the transition to the new system will assist businesses in moving from paper to digital procedures for exporting garbage within the EU market, thereby lowering administrative load. The system will assist in reducing illicit trash shipments across borders and streamlining cross-border garbage shipments within the EU.

The new digital procedure may need the recyclers to modify their workflows. They could also need to handle extra procedures when shipping across international borders. The regulations would primarily affect businesses who import waste from or export to the EU.

It is anticipated that the new approach will support the EU's attempts to hasten the shift to a circular economy.
