Canadian Lumber Producer Announced Massive Layoffs, Tariffs Blamed
It must be noted that Groupe Remabec employs approximately 2,000 people at its facility.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): One of Canada's top lumber producers, Groupe Remabec, announced temporary layoffs that will probably impact over 1,000 jobs.
The company, which has its headquarters in La Tuque, Quebec, said in a statement that Arbec Forest Products Inc., its manufacturing branch, will close permanently. More than 1,000 jobs will be immediately lost as a result of the migration. In the upcoming weeks, this figure is probably going to rise to 1,400. It should be mentioned that Groupe Remabec has about 2,000 employees at its location.

The decision was attributed by the corporation to declining demand and increased lumber duties in the United States. It mentioned ongoing disparities in international markets and resource access. The amount of Arbec's U.S. customs deposits on lumber exports is enormous. As a result, the business is less competitive with its American and Canadian rivals.
In an email, Quebec Forestry Minister Maite Blanchette Vezina stated that the province's forestry sector has been undergoing changes as a result of the softwood lumber levy and other economic uncertainties, particularly those brought on by President Trump's tariff policies.
