Canfor Pulp Anticipates Global Softwood Pulp Markets to Remain Subdued

Looking ahead, the company expects global softwood pulp markets to remain subdued.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Canfor Pulp Products Inc. reported its first quarter 2025 results.

In the first quarter of 2025, the company's operational income was $10.8 million, while in the fourth quarter of 2024, it was $4.1 million. During the quarter, the net income was $6 million, or $0.09 per share. Although the Q1 sales of $196.2 million were down than the $222.3 million in the same quarter last year, they were still far higher than the $163.1 million in Q4 2024. In the first quarter of 2025, the company recorded a 6% increase in pulp production.

A firm news release states that the first quarter of 2025 saw modest improvement in the fundamentals of the global softwood pulp industry. 104,000 tonnes of pulp were produced during the period, a 6% increase over the previous quarter. Canfor's operating income for the paper business was $5.4 million, down from $5.1 million in the prior quarter.

The company anticipates that the global softwood pulp markets will continue to be muted in the future. Through the second quarter of 2025, the demand for bleached kraft paper in North America is expected to stay comparatively low.
