Aluminum Products Producer Arconic to Layoff 163 in Lafayette
The spokesperson declined to specify the total number of employees at the Lafayette plant.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): An aluminum products manufacturer is planning job cuts at its Lafayette operation. Pittsburgh-based Arconic confirmed to Inside INdiana Business that it is closing the tube mill department at the facility, which will result in the layoffs of approximately 163 employees.
An Arconic spokesperson said in an email to IIB that the workforce reduction is the result of “external market factors.”
“Arconic’s Lafayette Operations has been negatively impacted by the loss of two key customers of its automotive driveshaft production,” the spokesperson said. “Arconic is taking this action to maintain the long-term sustainability of the Lafayette Operations.”
The Lafayette facility, located at 3131 E. Main Street, manufactures aluminum extrusions for the automotive, aerospace, commercial transportation, industrial, packaging and building and construction markets.
The spokesperson declined to specify the total number of employees at the Lafayette plant.
In a WARN Notice filed with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, Arconic said the move will affect 163 workers, though the spokesperson said the exact number of affected employees is “not currently known.”
“The United Steelworkers, the collective bargaining representative of many of the potentially impacted Arconic employees, has been notified and effect bargaining related to the upcoming reduction in forces has occurred between the USW and Arconic,” the spokesperson said.
The company said the layoffs are expected to be permanent, and the affected workers do have bumping rights and will receive undisclosed separation benefits.
The layoffs are scheduled to begin on April 4.
The spokesperson added, “Despite this impending action, Arconic anticipates a strong long-term outlook for its Lafayette Operations and remains committed to our employees, the facility, and the community.”
