Syracuse, NY DPW Will Issue Citations for Improperly Set Out Trash and Recycling Bins
Prior to this, DPW crews issued warnings without citations or fines at properties that were already not following proper set out requirements.
SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): The City of Syracuse Department of Public Works (DPW) has announced it will be issuing citations to property owners who do not follow setout requirements for trash and recycling carts, as of Monday, January 6. Fines are $100 for households that fail to correct violations after receiving a citation.
Prior to this, DPW crews issued warnings without citations or fines at properties that were already not following proper set out requirements. The most common mistakes included placing trash in recycling bins, bagging recyclables, and failing to break down large cardboard boxes, according to the DPW. This comes after the citywide implementation of uniform recycling carts back in the fall of 2024.
Property owners will have 24 hours to pull back their setout after receiving a citation to avoid paying the fine, according to the City of Syracuse. The trash can then be set out properly for pick up the following week and the appropriate week for recycling. Excess trash and recycling can also be transported to an Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency drop-off site.
