Gold Worth INR 35 Lakh Smuggled in Chargers, Switches Seized

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The air intelligent unit of customs has seized gold cut pieces concealed in wireless phone chargers and desktop switches worth ₹35 lakh from a passenger who arrived in Trichy from Kuala Lumpur.

Customs authorities at Trichy international airport said they developed suspicion over the activities of a passenger who arrived by Air Asia flight (AK-25) while engaged in routine checking on Saturday afternoon.

During interrogation, the passenger said he was carrying some electrical devices. On verifying the articles he carried, they found rectangular-shaped small gold rods concealed in desktop switches and half-ring shaped gold cut pieces concealed in wireless phone chargers.

The total weight of the 24 karat pure gold cut pieces seized was 580 grams, valued at ₹35.36 lakh. Further investigations were on, the officials said.
