According to Tata Steel, the UK’s steel requirement over the coming years is projected to surpass 10 million tonnes. The construction of offshore wind turbines, solar farms and nuclear power plants as well as infrastructure for hydrogen production and carbon capture projects require huge quantities of steel. An urgent action plan to decarbonise steel production is required to help the industry achieve net zero emissions.

The steel major anticipates steel requirement of more than 5 million tonnes towards construction of wind turbines at sea alone by 2030. The planned construction of solar and nuclear power plants may require additional 3.5 million tonnes of steel material. The remaining 1.5 million tonnes will be used to meet steel requirement in building infrastructure for hydrogen production and carbon capture projects.

Henrick Adam, Chairman, Tata Steel UK noted that a strong domestic and secure steel industry is fundamental to delivering the ambitious energy plans announced by the UK government. The UK steel industry expects rapid action from the government to save the domestic steel industry which is at a crossroads.
