Tata Steel Facility Faced with Criminal Investigation Over Alleged Pollution

The carbon intensity of its steelmaking process stands nearly 19% below the global average, it noted.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Tata Steel IJmuiden, Netherlands facility is being investigated by Dutch prosecutors, as part of their ongoing criminal investigations after alleged pollution caused by the facility to the surroundings.

According to Public Prosecution Service sources, the site visit is being carried out so as to obtain a deeper insight into the various process employed by the facility during its steelmaking process. The visit will mainly be focused on the operations of the coke and gas factories. Earlier in February, the authorities had hinted at investigations at Tata Steel facility to find out whether it discharged harmful and hazardous substances, intentionally or unlawfully.

Meantime, Tata Steel authorities extended full cooperation to the investigation and said that the visit would help the authorities to know more about the company and the processes it employ in steelmaking process. It noted that the facility has been ranked third in the world by the World Steel Association in the 2022 carbon intensity benchmark, which testifies its efficiency.

Tata Steel has been making significant investments at the facility, aimed at curbing carbon dioxide emissions. The carbon intensity of its steelmaking process stands nearly 19% below the global average, it noted.
