Customs Seized Smuggled Gold from Kenyan Nationals at Airport

The Customs officials noted that the New Delhi airport has become a preferred airport destination for smuggled gold.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Customs authorities at the Delhi International Airport seized gold worth crores from foreign nationals. This is considered as the biggest seizure of gold at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in recent times.

According to sources, two Kenyan citizens were intercepted by officials at the airport. They had arrived the airport from Nairobi via Addis Ababa Monday morning. After thorough search, the officials recovered 19 gold bars weighing 15.57 kilograms. The gold was found concealed in specially designed pockets of their dress. As per current market value, the value of the seized gold is estimated at around 7.5 crore.

Upon interrogation, one of the passengers admitted that he has visited the country four to five times in the past and that had carried gold with him on all the occasions. Meantime, the other accused is a first-time traveller.

The Customs officials noted that the New Delhi airport has become a preferred airport destination for smuggled gold. Also, the involvement of Kenyan citizens has not been very common until now, they added.

The two foreign nationals have not been arrested yet, as the investigation is in progress, said Customs Department.
