SAIL Steel Plant Announced Significant Capacity Expansion

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) announced plans to significantly boost its production capacity to cater to rising demand situation.
According to the company, the annual hot metal production capacity at the plant will be raised to 4.855 million tonne per annum (MTPA), compared with current levels of 4.5 MTPA. The crude steel production from the plant will also see corresponding jump from 4.2 MTPA to 4.85 MTPA. Also, the plant will witness a jump in its saleable steel production from 3.880 MTPA to 4.325 MTPA.

The company plans to launch a coke oven battery, a steel melting shop and an oxygen plant as part of the project. In addition, it plans to adopt various latest technological measures to enhance capacity of the existing blast furnaces. The investment project plans to launch a normalizing furnace inside the new plate mill.
The RSP plans to adopt various state-of-the-art environment-friendly technologies at the plant. It will utilize natural gas at various units and minimize the use of fossil fuels, in a bid to make steel-making process cleaner and greener. Also, new air pollution control systems will be installed at the plant to minimize air pollution.
