Sonoco Corporate Responsibility Report Unveiled New Sustainability Commitments for 2030

The company has been dedicated to reducing its environmental footprint for many years.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hartsville, S.C.-headquartered Sonoco released its ‘2020-21 Corporate Responsibility Report’ that highlights the company’s sustainability commitments for 2030. It comprises new commitments to reduce energy consumption, GHG emissions, water consumption and waste generation. In addition it also targets to boost ongoing efforts to deliver improved packaging sustainability and recycling.

The company has been dedicated to reducing its environmental footprint for many years. It has reduced normalised GHG emissions by approximately 25% since 2009. The report reiterates the company’s commitment to further advance its environmental progress by setting ambitious new targets, in line with the Paris Climate Agreement. In particular, the company announced its commitment to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 25% by 2030 from a 2020 baseline.

Howard Coker, President and CEO, Sonoco noted that the over 300 of the company’s operations around the world will participate in reducing GHG emissions by investing in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. The $115 million investment in Project Horizon will make it the lowest cost producer of URB in the world, thereby strengthening its recycled paperboard mill system, he added.
