LatAm Crude Steel Output Surged Substantially: ALACERO

The monthly laminate production hit 4.96 Mt, higher by almost 67% compared to the same month a year before.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest report published by the Latin American Steel Association (Alacero) noted that crude steel production in the region witnessed notable surge, driven by steady rise in steel demand across the regional countries.

The crude steel production in May this year recorded nearly 48% surge over the previous year. Also, the accumulated steel production during the initial five-month period of the current year was up significantly by 19.8%, compared to Jan-May ’20. The production of laminates during Jan-May ’21 rose significantly by 24.8% to total 23.2 Mt. The monthly laminate production hit 4.96 Mt, higher by almost 67% compared to the same month a year before.

The trade data until April this year suggests that total regional steel imports surged by 27.2%, compared to the same period last year. Imports from countries in the region accounted for 11% of the total imports. Meantime, exports to countries within the Latin American region represented 49.6% of the total exports, significantly higher than the average of 38.7% in Q1 this year. The exports to countries outside the region decreased. The accumulated total exports during the initial four-month period were down by 13% year-on-year.

Alejandro Wagner, executive director of Alacero noted that the Latin Ameican steel market is seen evolving positively in its path of normalization.
