New Report Highlights Impacts of Covid-19 on E-Waste Recycling

As per the study, nearly 97% of the surveyed companies stated that they had to buy additional laptops as the place of work shifted to employee homes from offices.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The new report released by Finland-based Blancco warned about dramatic rise in electronic waste during the Covid-19 pandemic. The report titled ‘The Rising Tide of E-Waste’ highlights the impacts of the pandemic crisis on e-waste recycling sector. The study was conducted in partnership with Coleman Parks.

As per the study, nearly 97% of the surveyed companies stated that they had to buy additional laptops as the place of work shifted to employee homes from offices. Also, 77% of respondents from the U.S. said that they were forced to buy new devices during this period. The study found that nearly 75% of the respondents purchased brand new devices, as the pandemic restrictions led to widespread shift from traditional offices to home office environments.

Nearly 78% of the survey participants noted that the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in unnecessary short term investment in technology. The report found that only 44% of enterprises had strict e-waste policy in place for management of end-of-life electronic devices. Many companies have not communicated or implemented these policies at workplaces.

The primary concern lies on how these devices will be dealt with at the end of their life, the report said.
