Census Bureau Signals Notable Decline in Aluminum Scrap Exports
The U.S. imported $351.50 million worth of aluminum scrap during the first seven months of the current year.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The most recent trade statistics released by the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that exports of aluminum scrap registered substantial decline during the initial seven-month period of the current year. The exports were valued at $1.13 billion during this period, lower by 16.22% when matched with $1.35 billion during the corresponding seven-month period in 2019.
Malaysia was the primary importer of aluminum scrap from the U.S. The value of exports to that country totalled $209.38 million, accounting for almost one-fifth of the total U.S. shipments. In second place was South Korea, with imports valued at $203.18 million. The South Korean imports surged higher significantly by approximately 13% year-on-year. India emerged as the third largest destination, importing $169.21 million worth of aluminum scrap from the U.S. The other key market destinations were China ($124.95 million) and Mexico ($61.77 million).

The U.S. imported $351.50 million worth of aluminum scrap during the first seven months of the current year. This compares with $494.54 million during the year-ago period. The top five sources of import were Canada ($223.34 million), Mexico ($101.20 million), Brazil ($5.61 million), Guatemala ($3.16 million) and the UK ($2.82 million).
