AF&PA: U.S. Containerboard Output Surged in June

Meantime, AF&PA reported 4% surge in total packaging papers & specialty packaging shipments.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released its U.S. Boxboard Report for the month of June this year. According to the report, the total U.S. boxboard production declined marginally by 1%, compared to June 2019.

The boxboard operating rate surged higher by 1.1% from June last year to 93%. Also, recycled board production was down by 5%. The total boxboard production witnessed year-on-year decline by 1% during the initial six-month period of the year as well.

The containerboard operating rate was 90.1%, up 1.8% from June last year. The June ‘20 containerboard production for export registered notable increase by 5% over the prior year month. The containerboard mill inventories recorded marginal decline, falling by 4,000 short tons from the previous month. When compared with June 2019, the inventories were up significantly by 48,000 short tons. The year-to-date containerboard production has jumped higher by 5%, upon comparison with the same six months of 2019.

Meantime, AF&PA reported 4% surge in total packaging papers & specialty packaging shipments. The operating rate was essentially flat at 86.8%, compared with the same month a year before. The mill inventories recorded month-on-month decline by approximately 5,000 short tons. On the contrary, the inventories were up sharply by 17,000 short tons, compared to June 2019.

The total printing-writing paper shipments tumbled 25% in June this year. The total inventory levels reported 6% decline over the prior month.
