San Group To Start Operations at Specialty Sawmill in Port Alberni
The value-added specialty mill flows into San Group’s vertically integrated model.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): San Group of Companies announced that it has started operations at its specialty sawmill in Port Alberni, Canada. It had purchased the former Chalwood Forest Products mill on Hector Road, which had been shut down for a period of over one year, in the month of April this year.
The company had rehired 100% of the former mill staff. Also, it had made significant investments in latest technology and machinery, as part of its efforts to reconfigure the mill for optimized operations. The company had upgraded the machinery at the mill in order to add functionalities to cut wide range of products including red cedar, fir, Sitka spruce and hemlock. With the investments, the mill is now capable of turning even the lowest quality log into lumber.
The value-added specialty mill flows into San Group’s vertically integrated model. The saw mill now has a production capacity of 35 mmbf of dimensional lumber, which will mainly be exported to other countries. The property in rural area allows further expansion in future, said company press release.
Meantime, Sans Group said that the construction of second mill at the Coulson sawmill site is still in progress. Also, the remanufacturing plant at its Stamp Avenue site is nearing completion.
