SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The imports of copper waste and scrap by the U.S. registered notable decline during the initial two-month period in 2020, says data published by the U.S. Census Bureau. The country imported $81.45 million worth of scrap copper during this period, down by over 24% when compared with the imports of $107.36 million during Jan-Feb ‘19.
The primary source of import of copper waste and scrap by the U.S. was Canada. The country imported $44.14 million worth of copper scrap from Canada. The imports from that country witnessed notable decline by almost one-third from the previous year. The second largest exporter was Mexico, whose shipments to the U.S. were valued at $30.39 million. In third place was Panama, whose exports to the U.S. totalled $1.19 million.

Meantime, the data through February ’20 suggests marginal increase in U.S. exports of copper waste and scrap. The country exported $451.82 million worth of material, as compared with the exports of $451.67 million in the corresponding two-month period in 2019.
The top five export destinations were Canada ($55.98 million), South Korea ($55.86 million), China ($51.57 million), Malaysia ($46.13 million) and Germany ($35.75 million).
