Scrap Import Trade Witnessed Mixed Trend in 2019

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The recent trade data published by various countries points to mixed trend in scrap imports by various countries during the full year 2019.

The data from Turkish Iron and Steel Producers Association (TCUD) suggests notable decline in scrap imports during the previous year. The country imported nearly 18.9 million tons of scrap during the year, valued at around $5.6 billion. By volume, the imports were down by 8.7% from 2018. Meantime, the value of imports dropped significantly by over 21% from the previous year.

The EU countries accounted for 63% of the total Turkish imports. The imports from the region totalled around 11.8 million tons. The other two major suppliers were the U.S. (3.8 million tons) and CIS region (1.9 million tons).

The recent report published by the Thailand Customs authorities indicates that the scrap imports by the country totalled around 980,000 tons, which is considerably lower by over 39% from 2018. The surge in imports of billets and pig iron led to reduced intake of scrap metal.

Meantime, Vietnamese scrap imports hit new high, with yearly imports totalling around 5.18 million tons in 2019. Upon comparison with 2018, the imports surged higher by almost 7.2%, said government statistics.
